Nanotechnology for Better Air
2004-06-13 15:08

Chinese University of Science and Technology and Hefei Municipal Diseases Prevention and Control Center have jointly developed a nanometer photo-catalyst based detoxification purifier. The new system is able to effectively dissolve organic pollutant gases such as formaldehyde, benzene, toluene and dimethyl benzene.  Capable to kill the indoor hazardous gases emitted by interior decorations once and for all, the new system is designed with the functions for disinfection, bacterium suppression, detoxification and air purifying. The prototype machines applied with the system have passed the verification check, of which the detoxification purifier for central air conditioning system has been put into mass production with the one for hospital  and  sedan  car  applications  under  the development.

After the consecutive observations for  half a month, Chinese scientists

eventually withdrew on September 4, 2003 from the last permanent ice station in the Arctic, which marked the completion of China's second scientific expedition to the southern pole.

The permanent ice station is located on a large bulk of floating ice with an area about 350 km at 78 degree of north latitude. During the expedition, Chinese scientists had made   consecutive   observations   of   the meteorological  conditions,   mechanism of sea-air exchange, ice depth, temperature, salinity and biological species over the northern pole.   Two Chinese made polar drifting buoys were installed on the vast floating ice, through which Chinese scientists will receive the date transmitted from the systems on a consecutive basis for 2 years.

The expedition has covered a vast area of 3000 km from north to south and 900 km from west to east. Snow Dragon expedition boat had run over the line of 80 degree of the north latitude and the expedition helicopter 81 degree of the north latitude, laid a new milestone for China's polar expeditions.

The expedition saw the first time application of Chinese made ROV submarine robot   who   completed   the   consecutive measurement of sea ice depth, sea ice bottom, temperature and salinity in different sea areas. Its contribution has made people see the landscape under the Arctic ice for the first time possible.

Scientists had employed the helicopter to place the GPS array for the first time over the Arctic ice to continuously monitor the movement tracks of sea ice. The onboard automatic weather station had for the first time collected the weather data over the area of 80 degree of the north latitude, filled in a blank of China's weather data on higher altitude of the Arctic region.
