Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang's Regular Press Conference on December 19, 2019
2019-12-19 20:17

Q: Reports say that the US House Foreign Affairs Committee passed the Tibetan Policy and Support Act of 2019 on December 18. Do you have any comment?

A: The US House Foreign Affairs Committee passed the Tibetan Policy and Support Act of 2019 in serious violation of international law and basic norms governing international relations. It blatantly interferes in China's internal affairs and sends a wrong signal to the "Tibet independence" forces. We made representations to the US and expressed deploring and strong opposition.

China's policy and position on Tibet-related issues is clear and consistent. Tibetan affairs are our internal affairs that allow no foreign interference. The US bill accuses China in an unfounded and biased way. We cannot accept that. We urge the US to fully recognize the highly sensitive nature of Tibet-related issues, honor its commitments to China, and stop pushing that bill or using those issues as a pretext to interfere in China's domestic affairs.

Q: Will US Special Representative Stephen Biegun to North Korea meet DPRK officials in Beijing? What is China's message to Biegun?

A: Chinese officials will be meeting Special Representative Biegun this afternoon. You may read our press release that's going to be published after the meeting.

Q: Portuguese leaders recently made some comments on the 20th anniversary of the return of Macao to China. Do you have any comment on their remarks?

A: The Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa sent a letter to President Xi Jinping and Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa made a statement to the media. They both highly commended the economic and social development as well as the successful implementation of the "one country, two systems" principle in Macao over the past 20 years since its return to China. They believe that Portugal-China relations will continue to serve as a unique example of countries with different political systems and cultural traditions co-existing in harmony, and that Macao will make greater contributions to the comprehensive strategic partnership between Portugal and China.

We appreciate the Portuguese leaders' positive remarks and best wishes for China-Portugal relations. Over the past two decades, principles of "one country, two systems", "Macao people governing Macao" and a high degree of autonomy have been faithfully implemented. Macao's remarkable progress has been there for all to see. By properly resolving the question of Macao in the spirit of friendship and mutual trust, China and Portugal set a good example for the world. China stands ready to work with Portugal to achieve greater progress in our bilateral relations.

Q: According to media reports, the UN Security Council is discussing draft resolutions on extending authorization of humanitarian aid cross-border deliveries to Syria. There are major differences at the moment. What's China's comment?

A: China attaches high importance to the humanitarian situation in Syria and has provided a large amount of humanitarian aid to the best of our capabilities for many years. That said, we believe humanitarian aid to Syria should be based on full respect for Syria's sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity, and the Syrian government's views on that should be heeded. At the moment, consultations are being held in the Security Council over the draft resolutions. China has been taking an active part in the discussions and will continue to bridge differences towards a consensus.

Q: Can you confirm reports that a female Chinese national was arrested for illegally entering US President Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida? If so, can you say what this person is charged with? Can you confirm her identity?

A: I'm not aware of the specific situation at this moment. I can tell you that the Chinese government asks overseas Chinese citizens to observe laws and regulations of host countries and not to engage in any form of illegal activities.

Q: Got a question on football. The German Club of FC Cologne announced that they pulled out a deal to open a football academy in China, saying it was a sporting reason. But one member of the club council justified the decision by saying that China is a totalitarian dictatorship. What's your reaction and what steps does China want to take in response to such criticism?

A: I'm not aware of that specific case. I'd refer you to the competent authorities for sports exchange and cooperation.

Also, the comments from the German side you quoted are pure nonsense.

Q: With the recent impeachment vote, President Trump became the third ever US president to be impeached. Although this is an internal affair, the international community is paying close attention. What's your comment?

A: The answer is already in your question.

It is America's internal affair, and I have no comment on that.
