A Letter to The New York Times on "A Hong Kong Stalwart Resigns"
2004-06-12 00:00

January 29, 2001.

Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my strong distaste for your editorial "A Hong Kong Stalwart Resigns" of Jan. 17, 2001.

Yours irresponsible comment on the resignation of Ms. Anson Chan, head of Hong Kong's civil service, can not be agreed by the people who stand for the interests of the Hong Kong people and really love Hong Kong.

Since returning to China in 1997, with the policy of "one country, two systems" and "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong", Hong Kong has enjoyed a high degree of autonomy. The social and economic systems in Hong Kong and its way of life have remained unchanged. This has been widely acknowledged by the international community. The Hong Kong government headed by Mr. Tung Chee Hwa, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administration Region(HKSAR) has withstood various tests in the past three years. By adhering to the principle of "one country, two systems" and the HKSAR Basic Law, the Hong Kong government has smoothly handled all affairs in a positive and proper manner. Facts speak louder than imagination. In the economic field, Hong Kong has successfully recovered from the Asian Financial Crisis and enjoyed high growth in the past year. With regards to the political field, unlike the colonial era, Hong Kong's political system is much more open. The Basic Law ensured the Hong Kong people a high degree of autonomy.

With the strong backing of the entire Chinese people, the Hong Kong Government and the people in Hong Kong can certainly run Hong Kong well and ensure its long-term prosperity and stability and create a bright future for Hong Kong.

Sincerely,

Cong Wu
Consul (Press Office)
Consulate General of the People's Republic of China
